'Anthem' Accused Of Being 'Destiny' Lite? That May Actually Be A Good Thing

While everyone has been playing the Anthem demo this weekend an embargo broke earlier in the week that allowed certain content creators and journalists to talk about the game's endgame.

The result? Anthem does not have any raids like Destiny or The Division 2 Instead, it has three strongholds repeatable at different difficulties, legendary contracts and cataclysmic world events, all of which can be used to gear up.

Anthem ] 's longevity We are already getting a preview of one of the three endgame Strongholds in the demo, and it functions sort of like a long – ish Destiny strike. some other stuff? Cue skepticism.

I don't really find myself in this camp, however, for a few reasons. First of all, Anthem unlike Destiny has free DLC, so who's to say what kind of endgame stuff is added later once … people actually arrive at the endgame. And it won't cost anything to take part in. But besides that, even if Anthem does end up having less content than Destiny and is sort of a " Destiny-lite " experience is that … really so terrible

Don't get me wrong, I love Destiny which you clearly know if you read my work as I write about the game practically every day. And yet Destiny is an investment . It's something like 750 hours into Destiny 2 total and 15% of the player base is still ahead of me. I don't have every exotic. You don't have every achievement. Hell I don't even have a title yet.

Because Destiny is structured like this, it can feel daunting to many players. It is easy to feel like you've fallen behind in Destiny because you don't have the time or money to keep up with new expansions that demand you to constantly increase your power and shelling out cash to participate . You might feel like you can't participate in the game's most prominent activities because you don't want to make the effort complicated, multi-hour raid with strangers, or you're so bad at PvP that

Enter Anthem . I can see Anthem filling some of these gaps here for players who like the concept of a loot shooter, but for something less life-consuming than Destiny appears to be. Granted, I have to play the final version of Anthem to see how this all plays out but:

  • Anthem might have a more effective story campaign that Destiny that can be played through by all players who feel satisfied with it
  • Anthem has forgone PvP entirely, which not only means that players do not have to worry about their skill relative to others in a competitive mode, and that opens up more potential for wild PvE gear and builds as a side effect
  • Anthem may never have anything as complicated as Destiny raids, but some players may appreciate being able to do everything the game has to offer with less-involved Strongholds, and not feeling like there's content they never get to. (No more than a quarter of Destiny players ever complete any given raid)
  • Anthem lets you essentially play four classes at once, while in Destiny if you want To play multiple classes you have to start over from scratch with each of them and constantly manage them all individually. But there's a lot more shared progress in Anthem
  • Anthem won leave players behind with DLC since it's all free. I don't know how power requirements will play into it, but the way things are set up with a wide range of selectable difficulty levels, my hunch is that new players will not lock players out at gearscore either, if if you want to do something new and you're not maxed out, just put it on easy.

Let me be clear, I don't think Destiny should change this match (though I don't think anyone would say no to free DLC), as I think Destiny can continue to do what it is doing, as it has built up a huge player base despite many aspects of feeling somewhat exclusive to hardcore players. What I am saying that I think there could be a market for a less intense version of Destiny that is still a fun looter and still somewhat complicated with different synergistic builds and tactics you can use in the game, but with less stuff going on overall. This might be the sort of feel like Diablo a game Anthem draws obvious influences from, which was something you could go back to pretty much and never really feel "behind" because you could grind for gear in any way you like, at whatever difficulty, never really competing against other players unless you were doing some sort of seasonal ladder.

Anthem being "less" than Destiny could be a turn off the some players. But even as a pretty hardore Destiny player myself, I honestly would welcome and game that I "only" sink 100-200 hours into instead of 500-700 +. I just have time to do both, plus The Division 2 plus everything else I have to / want to play. But I want to play as much as possible so if Anthem demands less of my time than Destiny given my current mindset, that's actually a point in its favor.
