Another bus driver attacked over mask rule

(Newser)
An Asian-American bus driver was trying to enforce a mask claim when he was hit with a wooden grille, according to San Francisco police. The driver of the San Francisco Municipal Railway (Muni) had asked three passengers – possibly teenagers – to leave the bus when an alleged spit on the driver and hit him several times with a miniature baseball bat per. Guardian. Police spokesman Robert Rueca says a preliminary investigation into the assault last Wednesday “did not indicate that race was a factor,”

; per. NBC News. The unidentified driver, however, tells Guardian that the young men referred to his race, where one claimed that he probably had coronavirus. The driver says the men initially followed his request to put on masks hanging from their chin, but took to face as soon as the bus started moving.

When the men finally got out, one of the group opened a panel on the side of the bus, the driver says. When the driver came out, the man allegedly spotted him, hit him twice with bats and hit him twice in the face. “I keep thinking to myself: the bat he pulled from his backpack could easily have been a gun,” said the driver, who received a broken finger. Police say the men fled “in an unknown direction.” No arrests have been made. The president of the union, which represents Muni drivers, says they have had to endure verbal abuse and racial harassment “on a daily basis” during the pandemic, per. Guardian. He urges the public to support operators in any way they can. However, the driver describes a recent verbal assault, including racial deception against two Asian-American passengers who tried to help him enforce the mask rule. (He is not the first bus driver to be attacked.)
