American Airlines plans to return the 737 Max for service in December

Dates of return for service are “highly dependent” on re-certification from the Federal Aviation Administration, the airline said Sunday. Max has been grounded worldwide since March 2019 after two crashes that killed 364 people.
American (EEL) said after being certified, it will phase in the 737 Max, starting with a daily 737 Max flight once a day between Miami and New York, starting Dec. 29 to Jan. 4. It will also consider extending flights beyond this time period.

“We remain in touch with the FAA and Boeing on the certification process and we will continue to update our plans based on when the aircraft is certified,”

; the company said in a statement.

The new list of flights will be available for booking as early as October 24, and customers will be made aware that they will be flying with a Max, the airline said.

The announcement follows US cuts to 9,000 jobs after calls for more coronavirus federal help failed. The airline is also expected to report earnings on October 22nd. In the first half of the year, the company lost $ 5 billion as the coronavirus pandemic continues to make its mark on the aviation industry.
Earlier in October, the FAA released a draft of the proposed pilot training for Max – just one of half a dozen procedural steps the agency has put out to be completed before giving final approval to airlines to fly the aircraft again. On Friday, the EU Aviation Safety Agency confirmed that it is also close to making it clear. However, it will still take more than a month to complete the final approval.
