We moderate comments. Our goal is to provide a meaningful commentary to a general readership. When screening submissions, we provide a space where readers can share intelligent and informed commentary that improves the quality of our news and information.
While most comments will be posted if they are on the topic and are not violent, moderating decisions are subjective. We make them as carefully and consistently as we can. Due to the number of reader comments, we are unable to review individual moderation decisions with readers.
We appreciate thoughtful comments that represent a range of views that make their point quickly and politely. We strive to protect discussions from repeated comments by either the same reader or different readers
We follow the same standards of taste as the daily newspaper. A few things we will not tolerate: personal attacks, obscenity, vulgarity, swear words (including explorations and letters followed by hyphens), commercial promotion, imitations, incoherence, proselytizing, and SHOUTING. Do not include URLs for websites.
We do not edit comments. They are either approved or deleted. We reserve the right to edit a comment quoted or excerpted in an article. In this case, we can correct spelling and punctuation.
We welcome strong opinions and criticism of our work, but we do not want comments to coincide with discussions about our policies, and we will moderate accordingly.
We appreciate it when readers and individuals quoted in articles or blog posts point out factual or important errors and will investigate any allegations. But these suggestions should be sent via email. To avoid distracting other readers, we do not publish comments that suggest a correction. Instead, corrections are made in a blog post or in an article.
