Continuing on the theme of strange omissions from Nintendo's upcoming sequel Super Mario Maker 2 is probably one of the biggest disappointments the lack of amiibo support in the game. It means no mystery mushrooms that make you 8-bit rendering of characters from video game history.
As confirmed by GameXplain after talking to a Nintendo representative, support for the NFC figures seems to have been completely jettisoned for the successor. The original Super Mario Maker supported almost all the characters in the original Super Mario Bros. playstyle and they gave some wonderful opportunities for levels using valuable characters from both inside and outside Mushroom Kingdom.
Of course, there is always the possibility that amiibo and Mystery Mushroom functionality could be patched in a later date. The original game received some pretty big updates after the release, and with all the hints of new things to come (as a place for Extra Game Styles), we can only hope that some of these things will appear in the future. No more Marie and Callie, no chance of a Marina cameo … to make use of their bulging amiibo collection. The release of new mushrooms was a big reason to check in regularly with the original game and they will be missed by many.
