Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez quoted the Bible on Wednesday after the White House press secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, suggested that the US government leave environmental protection up to God.
Sanders, a devoted evangelical Christian, added that the Trump administration would not take any points on the policy of "freshman congresswoman."
"I don't think we'll listen to her much of anything, especially not about issues that we will leave in the hands of a much higher authority," said Sanders on Sean Hannity's Fox News program on Tuesday night. She claimed that the country should leave the fate of the planet in "the hands of something and some much more powerful than any of us", presumably referring to God.
Ocasio-Cortez has been open about the need to mitigate the devastating effects of climate change and pushes an ambitious political proposal called the Green New Deal to descale the US economy and create jobs.
