Adriano Moraes knocks out ‘Mighty Mouse’

ONE flyweight champion Adriano Moraes (19-3) became the first man to ever score a victory over former UFC champion Demetrious Johnson (30-4-1), stopping him on strike in the second round of their selected match at ONE at TNT I.

The competition served as the main MMA competition at Wednesday’s event, which took place at Singapore Indoor Stadium and was broadcast live on TNT in the United States.

The higher Moraes stayed early on the outside, constantly shifting sideways, forcing Johnson to try to push the action from range. Moraes finally got a kick from his opponent and then fell down on the canvas and tried to threaten the leg. While Moraes could not finish the submission, the ensuing scramble saw him move to the top position, where he finished the round.

Moraes remained mobile in the second, with Johnson seamlessly changing position and appearing to press. The aggression was impressive, but it would backfire where Moraes snuck in a sharp combination with two blows against an advancing opponent that sent him crashing to the floor. Moraes took advantage of a stunned opponent, scored a legal knee to a downed enemy and earned the stoppage victory at the 2:24 mark in the second frame.

The ONE championship race in prime time in the USA got off to a rather frustrating start, with Eddie Alvarez (10-8) being disqualified in the first round of his lightweight competition with Iuri Lapicus (15-1).

After a brief emotional process to start the match, Alvarez shot within a distance and was able to pull the action to the canvas in the first minute. Sitting close to the cage and with his opponent in a dominant position, Lapicus turned his face towards the fence, leaving only the back of his head exposed. Alvarez threw a pair of right hands that landed to the bottom of the skull – and Lapicus screamed out before falling back onto the canvas.

Judge Justin Brown immediately intervened when Alvarez approached the hammerfists. After a short tussle with the defender, Brown Alvarez finally tucked the ball home.

After the call was made, a clearly emotional Alvarez said he believed the beatings were legal, but apologized for the violation and expressed concern for his opponent’s well-being when he was written off in a stretcher.

“You put me in a cage,” Alvarez said. “Judge, he’s in there. Whatever call he makes, that’s it. I apologize. I hope Iuri is doing well. ”

A former UFC and Bellator champion, Alvarez has now only earned one win in three ONE championship appearances.

Tonight’s opening tournament saw the heavyweight prospect Oumar Kane (3-0), better known as “Reug Reug”, keep his perfect career record unaffected with a first-round knockout by kickboxer Patrick Schmid (0-1).

Kane was patient to open the competition, but eventually swarmed with blows and worked his way inside before taking action on the floor. Schmid struggled to get back on his feet as Kane struck off with a blow and the match was waved off at the opening of 1:48.
