85 new cases, 8 deaths in Orange County on October 17 – Orange County Register

The Orange County Health Care Agency reported 85 new cases of coronavirus on Saturday, October 17, increasing the total to 56,672 cases.

The county has estimated 5,273 cases in the last 30 days.

Eight new coronavirus deaths were reported Saturday – with a total of 68 deaths among the last four updates – but county health officials noted that does not mean the eight deaths all occurred in the last few days.

Data on deaths in the county are collected from death certificates or collected during case investigations and can take weeks to process, officials said. The most recent deaths were Oct. 12, but some reported dates all the way back to June, the county health officer Dr. Clayton Chau at a press conference.

The county has so far reported 1

,409 deaths related to the virus.

Of the deaths in Orange County, 524 were skilled residents in the nursing home, 111 were in nursing homes and four were listed as homeless.

The county’s distribution of deaths by age is as follows:

  • 85+: 32% (452)
  • 75-84: 22% (307)
  • 65-74: 20% (277)
  • 55-64: 14% (199)
  • 45-54: 8% (111)
  • 35-44: 3% (38)
  • 25-34: 1.3% (20)
  • 18-24: <1% (4)
  • 0-17: <1% (1)

It is estimated that about 90% of the cumulative reported cases or 50,747 people from Saturday have recovered. The number of people who have recovered is based on the previous 28-day cumulative case count.

The county also reported 159 patients in coronavirus hospitals on Saturday. The peak of hospitalizations in Orange County was 722 patients on July 14th. There were 56 patients listed on ICUs in Saturday’s report.

The county update also reported that 984,271 coronavirus tests have been given since tests began locally, and at least 8,723 tests were reported in the last 24 hours.

Data submitted every day are preliminary and subject to change, officials stressed. More information may become available when individual case investigations are completed.
