Just when you thought things couldn’t get any worse for the San Francisco 49ers, they did. Last week saw headlines dominated by a rash of injuries from Week 2, with the Niners having the majority of them during their win over the New York Jets. Complaints about the quality of the lawn at MetLife Stadium prompted the NFL to investigate, but no problems were found.

Returning to the offense to face the New York Giants, the 49ers saw yet another key player to go down with injury, with tight end Jordan Reed immediately grabbing his ankle after trying to get a touchdown catch behind the end zone in the first quarter.

Reed left the game to be assessed by the team̵

7;s medical staff, but later returned only to leave again with an apparent knee injury. That knee injury is a sprained MCL, according to Niners coach Kyle Shanahan, and it will keep Reed on the sidelines for 6-8 weeks.

The 49ers were without a laundry list of top talents for that game against the Giants, including Jimmy Garoppolo, Nick Bosa, Solomon Thomas, Dee Ford, Raheem Mostert, Tevin Coleman and more. George Kittle, excluded from the Giants game, joined a number of key players who breastfed for another week in a row, and that made Reed so much more valuable to the offense. Even without all of those available players, the Niners managed to blow the Giants off the field with a 36-9 victory.

With Reed down, the Niners will likely turn to Ross Dwelley for extended snaps if Kittle has to sit out another week. Fortunately, rookie wideout Brandon Aiyuk started quickly and was a major contributor to the win against New York, and second-year receiver Deebo Samuel is also set to start practicing this week.
