Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez praised the leadership of New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on the issue of gun control in the wake of the deadly Christchurch mosque shootings of a white supremacist.
Ardern announced that, as a result of the remotely attacked terrorist attack that left 50 people dead and dozens more injured, New Zealand will definitely forbid her from calling "military style" weapons and parts that allow other weapons to be transformed.
Ocasio-Cortez, a New York Democrats and rising star in the party, made a comparison with the lack of action on gun control in America after mass shootings, such as the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre that killed 26, of which there is an epidemic in country.
"Sandy Hook happened six years ago and we can't even get the Senate to vote on universal background checks with / HR8," Ocasio-Cortez tweeted, referring to a house bill that would require background visits ks to all arms sales including private transactions.
"Christchurch happened, and within days New Zealand acted to get war weapons out of the consumer market. This is how leadership looks."
Last Friday, Brenton Tarrant, 28, immediately lived on his Facebook page when he arrived. Into two different mosques in Christchurch, while heavily armed, began shooting at Muslim worshipers and accidentally killed men, women, and children.
Tarrant released a manifesto along with his attack, indicating his white supremacist beliefs, his hatred of Muslims and his desire to see more acts of violence. He referred to immigration in white majority as an invasion. Tarrant is in custody pending charges.
"Today, I announce that New Zealand will ban all military semi-automatic weapons," Ardern said on a press conference Thursday.
"We will also prohibit all assault weapons. We prohibit all high capacity magazines. We will ban all parts with the ability to convert semi-automatic or any other type of firearm into a military style semi-automatic weapon. We will ban parts that causes a firearm to create semi-automatic, automatic or close to automatic firefighters. "In short, every semi-automatic weapon used in the terrorist attack on Friday will be banned in this country," Ardern said.
Despite calls from campaigns and more mass shootings are a similar feature unlikely in America, where gun control is a severely fragmented problem because the right to carry weapons is enshrined in the constitution during the second amendment.
In February, Parliament passed to HR8, called the bipartisian background control law from 201
Licensed gun dealers are currently required by law to conduct background checks on people buying weapons. But private sellers are not obliged to run any controls that the new bill requires.
