As usual, CW made the bulk of its pilot recordings in a fall, and the network places great emphasis on IP this year. The green-lit four pilots tonight – all based on familiar titles – two spinoffs of the existing CW series, Riverdale and Jane the Virgin a Nancy Drew drama and The Lost Boys restart. The Riverdale spinoff Katy Keene, following four Archie Comics characters and telenovela anthologies series Batwoman Jane Novela both hail from it creative auspices behind the original series: Jane the creator / executive producer Jennie Snyder Urman, star Gina Rodriguez, exec producers Ben Silverman and director Brad Silberling. and studio CBS TV Studios, and Riverdale creates / executive producer Robert Aguirre-Sacasa, Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. TV.
The untitled Nancy Drew drama inspired by the classic mysteries comes from Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage's false empire ( Gossip Girl, Dynasty ) and CBS TV Studios, while The Lost Boys is from Rob Thomas' Spondoodle, Gulfstream TV and Warner Bros. TV.
I hear that CW has not finished collecting pilots, with LA Complex restarting among the scripts that are heated. As usual, the network split its pickups in the middle between its sister studies tonight, with two orders for WBTV and two for CBS TV Studios.
CW originally developed a series of adaptation of the iconic 1987 Warner Bros horror comedy movie The Lost Boys with Thomas writing during the 2016-17 development season. While the project did not go to pilot, networking brass remained very high on the title and had looked at rebuilding it. While Thomas has been busy with his Veronica Mars restart for Hulu, an author of Heather Mitchell ( Scandal, Gray & Anatomy ) was all excited and the new incarnation took the steam up in this development season.
Katy Keene, centered on the emerging fashionista in New York City, is the other Riverdale spinoff. The first, Sabrina Chilling Adventures started at CW before moving to Netflix, where it has been a breakout hit. Aguirre-Sacasa, who wrote with Katy Keene with Riverdale co-exporter Michael Grassi, said last summer that the new offshoot is "very different from Riverdale."
Today's orders give Berlanti Pords. two pilots at CW, Katy Keene and Batwoman.
Posted by Jane writer Valentina Garza and directed by Silberling, Jane Novela is pictured as a soap, telenovela-inspired anthology series in the tradition Jane the Virgin, where each season is based on another fictional novel "written by" Jane Villanueva and told by the author himself. The first installment takes place on a Napa Valley Vineyard.
Spinoffen had already received a flashing green light, with the mother ship's cast-controlled Alyson Silverberg and Jonathan Clay Harris drained to throw it.
Written by Noga Landau ( Magicians ), the untitled Nancy Drew project centered on the 18-year-old Nancy Drew in the summer after her high school.
Launch of a Nancy Drew TV series has been a priority for CBS TV Studios, which has the rights to the classic YA mystery books originally published by Stratemeyer Syndicate and later Simon & Schuster. The studio developed two Nancy Drew series over the past three years Drew at CBS in the 2015-16 development season, which went to pilots starring Sarah Shahi and was close to a sequel and Nancy Drew on NBC this past season. Both incarnations by writers Tony Phelan and Joan Rater and producer Dan Jinks were conceived as successors to the books with an adult Nancy Drew in the middle.
Here are details of the newly collected CW pilots:
