A 21-year-old Iredell County man drowned Sunday after jumping from a fishing port on Lake Glenville in Jackson County, reports the Jackson County Sheriff's Office.
Marquise Maurice Dukes of Harmony was restored around Sunday said officials in a Facebook post. Friends of Dukes identified him on social media as a junior at Western Carolina University.
Jackson County Sheriff's Office officials say a rescue group and the Cashiers Fire Department were called shortly after. about a swimmer who disappeared near Pine Creek Road in the unincorporated Glenville community, the release said. The lake is about 170 miles west of Charlotte.
"On arrival, it was determined that the swimmers had jumped out of a fishing port and tried to swim back to a designated swimming area by the pine trees," a release said.
"Shortly after jumping out of the fishing harbor, the swimmer had to shout for help. A witness tried to help the fighting swimmer but couldn't bring the threatened swimmer to the beach. Dukes lived on Mount Bethel Road in the city of Harmony, northeast of Statesville, officials said a release.
