2021 NFL Draft Grades: Overall grades for the Steelers 2021 draft class

Everyone else does, so why can we not?

Although true classification of a draft class comes several years into their NFL career, it is a widely accepted practice of NFL fans to classify the total production immediately after the NFL draft. Recognizing that none of these players have yet entered an NFL field, the staff at Behind The Steel Curtain share their overall thoughts along with the character of the Steelers 2021 draft NFL. Remember, we are all Steelers fans, so this will definitely be seen with wearing black-gold goggles.

Grade: B +
Favorite choice: Kendrick Green
Head scraper: Isaiahh Loudermilk

Analysis: I was very concerned about the Steelers draft through the first two rounds, not because of who they chose, but because of what they had not yet addressed. Draft center Kendrick Green, who seems to fit better with what the Steelers want from the center than others they could have had in the past, decided to take their players in the first two rounds even better. There were a few curious choices in the middle of day 3, but it was a steal to get Quincy Roche in round 6. They took a corner back late, but adding a number like UDFAs have them where they just need one to hold on. The Steelers checked all the boxes with things they needed.

Grade: A-
Favorite choice: Najee Harris
Head scraper: Devodrick “Buddy” Johnson

Analysis: This draft started right for me when the Steelers tab Najee Harris, the best runner back in the draft, added the offensive line with my second favorite pick, Kendick “Son of 2 AM” Green, and Dan Moore. Although it took me a while, I embrace the Pat Freiermuth election, “Muth” !!!!! A 263 lb player named Pressley Harvin (I call him Elvis from now on). Write me heck. Three Norwood could be a response to the loss of Mike Hilton, “The Steal” Quincy Roche was so much more in Temple than his last season in Miami, gave Loudermilk a chance, and I just did not see Buddy as a fourth round. But what do I know? The important people did. A definite Steelers draft and a pretty nice overall. All that truth in 145 words, friends!

KT Smith

Grade: B
Favorite choice: Quincy Roche
Head scraper: Isaiahh Loudermilk

Analysis: The Najee Harris election immediately addressed the Steelers’ greatest needs and did so with the consensus that best ran back in the draft. Kendrick Green will be a fan favorite because of his Willie Colon style. Pat Freiermuth could become a stud if Matt Canada maximizes his versatility. But Quincey Roche is my favorite choice. He could be the team’s next big late round gem as a pass-rushing specialist and special team demon. I love his engine and his cerebral approach to the game. He has excited me.

However, trading a fourth in next year’s draft Laudermilk is astounding. Maybe another team was ready to take him. But it seems like a heavy price to pay for a guy who probably could have been had for nothing.

Geoffrey Benedict

Grade: B +
Favorite choice: Buddy Johnson
Head scraper: Dan Moore Jr.

Analysis: The Steelers resolved my early concerns that they would find a starting center when they found Pouncey-lite Kendrick Green in the third and it was close to winning my favorite pick. This choice saved the first two rounds, ignoring the position. When they went back to the offensive for a big project tackling with a big hole at the cornerback I was a little confused. They would not address corner until the 7th round.

One of my big wish list items was a more athletic Vince Williams for mating with Devin Bush. The Steelers took a good turn on that role with Buddy Johnson, who also happens to be a first-class guy in the locker room. He also plays special teams, and that helped him remain my favorite pick, even when the Steelers took the best player in the country with their last pick.

Shannon White

Grade: B
Favorite choice: Najee Harris
Head scraper: Isaiahh Loudermilk

Analysis: After spending quite a long time the last three days researching and classifying each choice, I will try to keep this answer short and sweet. I love the Kendrick Green choice, but I have to go Harris because his choice set the tone for the whole draft. The three best choices are cornerstones. Buddy Johnson looks like a Steelers linebacker, and Roche could be a stealer.

My overall draft class would have been higher if not for the Loudermilk selection. I have already explained my thoughts and feelings about the choice in my article, so let me just say that I hope and pray that he proves me wrong.

Michael Beck

Grade: A-
Favorite choice: Pat Freiermuth
Head scraper: Isaiahh Loudermilk

Analysis: I’ll probably be higher on Freiermuth than most, but in the Steelers’ existence, they really never focused primary assets on the tight end position. In a modern offense heading into a transition period, Freiermuth will be highly targeted and supported if the Steelers draft a new quarterback in the years to come. This guy wants to be the Steelers’ safety blanket for crime.

Loudermilk will always be questioned until he proves his worth. A relatively unknown – unless you have studied 400 prospects – the Steelers invested a lot of draw capital to get him. The defensive line is already filled with talent. I do not anticipate much playing time for Loudermilk at all. It can also be difficult for him just to get to the team.

Anthony Defeo

Grade: B +
Favorite choice: Kendrick Green
Head scraper: Isaiahh Loudermilk

Analysis: The Steelers went into the 2021 NFL draft with the need for starters at multiple positions. Three – backward, tight end and center – practically asked for good prospects to get in and take over from day 1. The Steelers found three main candidates for just that in Harris, Freiermuth and Green. The rest of the class mostly includes exciting prospects that could develop. All in all, I like what the Steelers did. But I’m usually easy to please when it comes to draft.

Jeff Hartman

Grade: B
Favorite choice: Najee Harris
Head scraper: Isaiahh Loudermilk

Analysis: The best choice could have been Pressley Harvin III, the player from Georgia Tech, but I decided to go with my real favorite – Najee Harris. Why? Because I feel like Harris is becoming a game-changing runner back. Not only is he an excellent player but also a huge young man. A good choice both from football and character, and I have a feeling that anyone who wanted another on choice No. 24 will look for a No. 22 jersey in week 8.
