2021 MLB All-Star Game: Tim Anderson, Max Scherzer and eight others named as replacements

Major League Baseball announced a series of All-Star replacements on Saturday, with a total of 10 players joining the roster ahead of Tuesday’s game.

In the U.S. League, the honors went to shortstop Tim Anderson (Chicago White Sox), right-hander Chris Bassitt (Oakland Athletics), second baseman Whit Merrifield (Kansas City Royals) and assistant filmmaker Joey Wendle (Tampa Bay Rays).

Anderson and Merrifield were voted in by the players as they replaced Houston Astros infielders Jose Altuve and Carlos Correa, who had both retired from the Midsummer Classic.

As for the National League, the new names include right-handers Walker Buehler (Los Angeles Dodgers), Freddy Peralta (Milwaukee Brewers), Max Scherzer (Washington Nationals) and Taijuan Walker (New York Mets) as well as catcher Yadier Molina (St. Louis Cardinals) and third baseman Justin Turner (Dodgers).

As with Anderson and Merrifield, Molina got the designation using Player Ballot. He was to replace San Francisco Giants backstop Buster Posey, but he told reporters Saturday that he, too, will retire due to a foot injury. JT Realmuto of the Philadelphia Phillies starts in Posey̵

MLB considered that the following players will be inactive for the All-Star Game:

With Altuve, Correa, Brantley and Pressly all out for some reason, the Astros will not have a representative game in the game.

The 2021 MLB All-Star Game is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, July 13 and will host Coors Field in Denver, Colorado. The Home Run Derby takes place on Monday, July 12th. This will be the first of both events in two years, as the 2020 editions were canceled due to the global pandemic of COVID-19.
