2020 Cadillac XT6 first appearance: Key addition does not have flagship capabilities



"Escalade is a hope, but it is too big for a large part of the world," says Andrew Smith, CEO of Global Cadillac. Cadillac leaders have recognized the need for a unibody three-line family vehicle for many years to keep customers from leaving the mark. The speed of an entry in this segment has grown at low gasoline prices, which are demanding for larger vehicles in the United States and an increasing appetite for SUVs in China.

Enter XT6, a six or seven-passenger crossover that rounds out the core lineup. The compact XT4 is in the fastest growing segment, the XT5 is in the largest segment globally, and the XT6 is a walk-up that offers more space and utility to families who do not need full-size Escalade.

The XT6 is practical. It does not attempt to make a broader statement for the brand. Work started before XT4 was finished; XT6 was developed with the whole range in mind. Board members chose to name XT6 instead of XT7 "because we can't see anything that strikes this and XT5," Smith said.

It does not replace CT6 as the tech flagship ̵

1; for one, it does not have Super Cruise, which provides hands-free driver assistance on the highway. Super Cruise will begin to run beyond the Cadillac lineup by 2020 – after the XT6 launch, said the newly-tagged Cadillac president Steve Carlisle.

The goal was to hit the Escalade cache with a vehicle from the same C1 architecture as the XT5, Chevrolet Traverse, and GMC Acadia, which make it possible to do so on the same plants in Spring Hill, Tennessee as well as in Shanghai.

During the jacket, the known 3.6-liter V-6 310 hp and 271 lb-ft with cylinder deactivation and stop / start capacity. It is mated to GM's 9-speed automatic transmission, as opposed to the eight-speed XT5. Although it was designed to accommodate extra power supplies, execs are mum for now. Electric motors may not be on the cards. Carlisle pointed to GM's strategy for custom-built electrified vehicles such as the Chevy Bolt and Volt.

The XT6 has MacPherson struts in front and five-link rear suspension with pre-tensioned springs, and it gets an upgrade from the XT5 damping system, XT6 chief engineer John Plonka said. Continuous damping is standard on the sports model and optional on Premium Luxury. As in the XT5, the optional AWD system can be turned off for better fuel economy. A double coupling rear axle provides torque vectoring. AWD is standard on sports, optional on luxury. So even though the XT6 will not make Moab, it will tackle the hut.

To stand alone, it had to be present. With the XT6 running 9.3 inches longer and 2.3 inches wider than the XT5, Smith said it was one of the first times he was asked to make a vehicle higher. All this adds weight, but after much debate it was considered crucial. And while Cadillacs has been known to split industrial standard vehicle segments into the past, XT6 sits in the heart of the segment dimensionally.

The XT6 was designed and constructed in Detroit as a global vehicle and should have its own appearance and character. When designers had a clear picture of the target buyer, they dropped the giant wheels, after which the sketches floated easily. XT6 is the first vehicle from scratch to adopt the soft, simpler look of the Escala concept since the 2016 year divergence from hard-edged years – but it retains signatures as the vertical light conditions. The new look resonated in customer clinics, and clay models were sent to China for input.

Cadillac designers emphasize a spacious interior. All three rows had to be comfortable. In China, this is often a multi-generation purchase, designed for parents in the front row, children in the second and grandparents in the back, so the XT6 comes with a choice of two captain's chairs or a three-seat central bench.

This seat arrangement necessitates redirection of air vents, allowing ample head and leg room for adults in the back, a double tube sunroof and proper acoustics for front to rear conversations. The seats have a new structure for comfort, and the leather has a new chevron stitch pattern. The front seats are heated and cooled; the second row is heated. Additional two-row cup holders are in a pull-out drawer under a center console having separate air conditioning units. There are outlets for power supplies throughout.

Second row seats pitch, tilt and slide to access the back, or you can walk between the captain's chairs. Cargo area buttons flip down headrests and fold the third and second rows perfectly perfectly for the Home Depot round. The spare wheel well may also store the safety shade. Above the well is a storage box with a tire that stays in position at any angle handle for long life.

There are two models: Sport and Premium Luxury. Both can be ordered with a Platinum package. Luxury adopts the Escala face closer with a lot of light trim. Sport features a black mesh grid inspired by the V-series and more black trim for a murdered look. Standard wheels are 20 inches, with optional 21's for sports.

Inside is a new look steering wheel and upgraded dashboard, but the overall look resembles XT5 with something mixed by how materials such as microsuede, engineered wood and copper carbon-fiber webs are used.

Next-generation CUE infotainment system bends on the 2020 model with a knob that moves like a joystick or you can touch the 8.0-inch screen. And yes, there are volume buttons and an 8 or 14 speaker Bose sound system. Connectivity includes charging of mobile phones and NFC technology to allow Bluetooth pairing of Android phones with one touch.

Although there is no Super Cruise, driver systems include automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, parking assistance, track deviation, steering assistance, and night vision with automatic high beam and optional adaptive headlights that are expected to be legal in the US soon. Haptic safety alarms vibrate the seat.

The first pre-production vehicle rolled off the line in Spring Hill in September. The employees named it Elvis when it left Tennessee for a dealer meeting in Las Vegas. Dealers have complained ever since, Smith said. The Shanghai factory built its first model in December.

The XT6 is sold in the spring, competing against the Audi Q7, Infiniti QX60 and Volvo XC90. Competitive pricing means it can start from $ 45,000 to $ 55,000 and still slot easily between XT5 ($ 42,690- $ 66,890) and Escalade, which opens at $ 76,490.

Moving the Cadillac headquarters to Detroit will help launch the XT6, and there's a new model planned every six months, Carlisle said. Time in New York was well spent, he said, but "having decision makers and sellers in the immediate vicinity will only help."
