A 17-year-old boy police officer believes a spectator at a junior basketball game was stabbed and later died at the hospital from his injuries
Police said on Saturday that emergency services were called to Eagle Stadium in the south-west Melbourne suburb of Werribee in the late afternoon on Friday.
Another boy, 15 years old, is helping the police with their investigation and has been released without charge.
The rest of the scheduled games on Friday were canceled. Some of the games involved children as young as 7 or 8 years old.
Spectators reported seeing a man running with a knife in his hands.
A woman whose daughter was playing basketball at the time told local media that the incident was “shocking.”
“My friend saw someone on the floor in the hallway right after he was stabbed,” she told local media. . “This was game under 8 years old and it’s lucky that nothing more serious happened.”
