Welcome to the collection of the best new Android applications and live wallpapers that were shown live in the Play Store or viewed by us in the previous two weeks or so. Today’s roundup is sponsored by droidcon, and this year’s conference will feature three events that you can easily watch from your home. Of course, we also have a few notable titles to share with everyone, such as a new minimal launcher called Ratio, a free augmented reality app from Amazon themed for Halloween, and OnePlus Messages finally made its way to the Play Store. So without further ado, here are all the new and remarkable Android apps that have been released in Play Store in the last two weeks.

This year, droidcon goes completely virtual! Wherever you live, you can attend any (or all) of the three major droidcon 2020 events from your home. Each conference will feature more than 90 tech sessions, workshops, and one-on-one sessions on Android development – with access to 270 sessions, a wealth of face-to-face video chats, and thousands of devs around about the world when you sign up to participate in all three. Even better, this year’s fares are open: Pay as much or as little as you would like to attend.

Relationship

Ratio is the latest launcher trying to reinvent the wheel. Although I can respect this kind of mission statement, after seeing so many launchers try the same thing with mediocre success, it’s hard to make similar demands without a grain of salt. What you get is still a pleasant enough experience that flows relevant info to the launcher’s primary user interface, such as things like weather, notes and a timer. So if you are a power user, you will probably like what is provided, and at least what you get is a solid effort, and since development is active, you can expect frequent updates that bring lots of fixes and improvements together . Plus, the app is completely free to use, so that goes for it too. So if you are still looking for the perfect launcher, Ratio is actually worth a look.

Amazon AR player

Amazon AR Player is a new release from Amazon that can display interesting images of real objects using augmented reality. All you have to do is point the phone’s camera at a QR code on any Amazon box, and you’ll be treated to interesting pictures, like pumpkins or adorable corgi dogs. While there is no real point in this app, it’s nice to see Amazon having fun with its deliveries, but unfortunately it’s like all AR apps that this release is fine and so lots of lighting is recommended if you like will ensure that the app works properly. So far, user reviews point to a rough experience showing that Amazon AR Player could use much more polish, which is a shame.

Name LightFinder

If you do not know the first thing about light bulbs, you might want to check out Signify LightFinder. This is an augmented reality app that utilizes AI so this app can recognize any bulb you throw at it. Basically, if a bulb burns out in your house and you are unsure of make and model, you can use this app to scan the bulb and then you will be treated to a list of stores that have the perfect replacement. You can even order these replacements directly through this app, almost as if that’s the whole point of an app created by Philips, a bulb manufacturer.

Dynamics 365 Remote Assist

Dynamics 365 Remote Assist is a tool for technicians to solve problems with external partners, or at least that’s what the description says. Considering I have no way to test this app, all we have to continue is this description, but more or less this is an app for those who belong to Microsoft Teams or Dynamics 365 so they can easily troubleshoot issues through mixed reality comments. Basically, technologies can leave virtual notes appearing when using AR to see an off-site issue, which is actually pretty cool if you think about it.

Looker Mobile

Looker Mobile comes from Google and is an app created so that users can access, filter and share their favorite Looks content when you are out and about. Essentially Looker is a Google Cloud data analytics platform, and this app is the latest way to access your content from your phone. Of course, you need to have a Looker login to gain access, so if you do not have one, you have good luck for now.

FOX Sports 5G View Powered by Samsung Galaxy

FOX Sports 5G View Powered by Samsung Galaxy is a long name for an interactive video player, but that’s exactly what you get with this app. In essence, you can rewind and reflect important moments during your favorite baseball games, and you can do so from multiple camera angles, which is actually quite useful when reviewing a weak call. So if you are a baseball nut who would like a better overview of every game through your Android device, this is the app for you.

Android Police coverage: OnePlus makes its major messaging update available to more users

OnePlus has been on a tear recently and uploaded its apps to the Play Store. This makes it easier for the company to update its apps without having to deal with operators, and while you already have this messaging app installed on your OnePlus device by default, you no longer have to wait for operator updates to make sure you are on it latest version. Unfortunately, this list can only be seen by those who own OnePlus devices, which is why the widget below loads into a dead Play Store link for everyone else.

Verizon Multi-View Experience

The Verizon Multi-View Experience is a multi-camera experience where viewers can view concerts and other events from multiple camera angles. In essence, you can control the camera in these videos, and you can even quickly rewind, rewind, and pause no matter what angle you see at the time. Presumably this is a service provided to Verizon customers to show 5G, though it’s not like we could not stream videos until Verizon had new technology to resell all of them. Still, if you’re a Verizon customer, you might as well check out this app if you have any interest in multi-angle videos.

Belkin sound form

Belkin Soundform is an app that can add services like Amazon Alexa to your Belkin SOUNDFORM Elite smart speaker. In essence, this is an accompanying app for that device, but if you have already purchased the smart speaker, you should already know this. As you might expect, you can adjust the volume of your speaker, and you can also select and search for music. It is a no-frills app that serves its purpose dutifully.

UE Fits DEV

I’m not sure what to make of UE FITS DEV. It is listed as a regular release, though the word DEV in the title makes it look like this is an app for testing purposes. Still, if true, this release is a sign of things to come. As it looks, UE FITS DEV is designed to help you configure your UE FITS genuine wireless earphones. This app can also help guide people through the molding process for their personal earplugs.

Live wallpapers

Wallow – Cloud live wallpaper

If you are a fan of minimal wallpapers you would like to watch Wallow – Sky live wallpaper. The app shows gradient backgrounds that change color throughout the day, just as the sun rises and sets. While you can see some streaks in these gradients, the presentation is generally pleasant, and the clean backgrounds certainly fit a minimal setup. So if you are interested in themes on your device but have not yet found a live wallpaper that does not get in the way of your icon selection, Wallow is an excellent option.

Block live wallpaper

Not only do we have a live wallpaper this week, we have two. Blocks live wallpaper offers a design that mimics what you would find on the new Pixel 5, and it’s completely free to use without ads or IAPs in sight. So while this may not be the flashy live wallpaper around, anyone trying to theme their device to look like the Pixel 5 will definitely love this app.

COVID apps

MI COVID Alert

If you could not tell by the name, the MI COVID Alert is the exposure application app for the state of Michigan, and it has already earned its ENS badge in the Play Store, then actually uses the API from Google. This means that the app works via bluetooth, and if you encounter an infected person who has been tracked, you will receive a notification of potential exposure. As easy as nothing.

Jersey COVID Alert

Jersey COVID Alert is the ENS app for Jersey, not to be confused with New Jersey. This is actually the country that New Jersey was named after, so it’s not a typo, and if you happen to live on this small island in the English Channel, then this is the official exposure messaging app you’re looking for. The title is already listed with the official ENS badge in the Play Store, so actually uses Google’s API, which means the app works via Bluetooth just like the rest.
